City Council Races in Black Jack, Florissant, Hazelwood; School Boards Uncontested

City Council races in Florissant, Black Jack and Hazelwood top the April 8th municipal and school board ballot in the Florissant Valley area.

There are no actual races in either the Ferguson-Florissant or Hazelwood School District as there are just enough candidates for the available seats. In the Hazelwood District, incumbents Diane Dowdy and Ann Gibbons will be reelected and be joined on the board with Charles (Chuck) Woods for three-year terms.

Tony Weaver, who had ran for the board before, has dropped out of the race and will now try to unseat County Councilman Mike O’Mara for the 4th district seat in the Democratic primary on Aug. 5. Cheryl D. Lathan will be unopposed for the remaining two years of Joe Donahue’s term on the school board.

In Florissant, two incumbents face challengers, but Ward 4 Councilman Keith English and newcomer John Grib have no opposition. Grib will succeed Ward 2 Councilman John Moran who decided not to run for reelection. All are three-year terms.

Incumbent Dan Sullivan faces opposition from Andrew Podleski in Ward 6 , who ran last year for mayor losing out to Mayor Robert Lowery, Sr. by a 57.7%-42.3% margin. In Ward 8, incumbent Mark Schmidt is opposed by Greg Stiebel, another long-time Florissant resident.

In Hazelwood there are two contested seats on the ballot and a possible write-in campaign in another ward. In Ward 2, incumbent Bob Aubuchon is running against Robert Heuermann. In Ward 6, Patricia Robin is opposed by Warren (Butch) Taylor. Mike Conley is unopposed in Ward 4. Robert Cocks in the only candidate on the ballot in Ward 8, but there is a write-in campaign for Mary Singleton. All are for three-year terms.

In Black Jack, there is only one contested race. In Ward 3, incumbent Delsie Boyd faces challenges from Gregory Anderson and Leo Simmons for a two-year term. In Ward 1 incumbent Donald Krank is unopposed as is Sandra Muller in Ward 2, both for two-year terms.

There are no special elections, tax levies or fee increases on ballot in any of these cities.
