Flo Valley Track Teams Return to Wash U.; Women 2nd At Invitational

For the second weekend in a row, last weekend, Track & Field teams at St. Louis Community College at Florissant Valley were at Washington University’s Bushyhead Track, which surrounds historic Francis Field, site of the 1904 Olympic Games.

Last weekend the Washington University Invitational had many four-year colleges and universities including NCAA Division I St. Louis University and the University of Illinois as well as Division II Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, which is moving to Division I this August, and the University of Southern Indiana.

Florissant Valley women took second in team scoring with 98 points but was a distant second to Division III Washington University. The hosts Bears won the women’s meet by scoring 163 points while the Norsewomen held off Greenville (Ill.) College, another Division III school, by four points. At least 15 schools scored points in the women’s meet.

On the men’s side Florissant Valley managed to score only 18 points and was 12th out of 16 men’s teams that scored in the meet. The University of Wisconsin-Platteville won the meet with 134 points, about 55 ahead of runner up Central College (Iowa).

In relay events the Florissant Valley women won the 4×100 Meter Relays while taking third in the 4×400 Relay. The Florissant Valley men took third in the 4×400 Relay but did not finish the 4×100 Relay.

Three Florissant Valley women finished in the top four in the 100-Meter Dash with freshman Teneshia Peart winning the event, sophomore Courtney Jones finishing third and freshman Kalinda Horton taking fourth. Three Norsewomen also finished in the top four in the 200-Meter Dash as freshman Bionca Gildon won the event, Jones was second and Freshman Kristin McCoy was fourth.

Florissant Valley took the top two spots in the Women’s Long Jump by a pair of freshman as Ashley Zanders won the event while Brittney Monroe was runner up. Zanders was third in the Women’s 100-Meter Hurdles, sophomore Ysatis Williams took second in the Women’s 400-Meter Dash, sophomore Tanieka Evans was fourth in the Women’s 400-Meter Hurdles and freshman Shanay Hayes was eighth in the 200-Meter Dash.

A pair of freshman, Tyrone Hawkins and Josh Vaughn led the Florissant Valley men with fifth-place finishes. Hawkins was fifth in the Men’s 400-Meter Dash while Vaughn was fifth in the Men’s 400-Meter Hurdles. Other top eight finishers include freshman Terence Hawkins, sixth in the Men’s Long Jump, and freshman George White, eighth in the 200-Meter Dash.

Saturday Florissant Valley Track & Field heads to Edwardsville, Ill., for the SIUE Cougar Classic; with field events starting at 9:30 a.m. while running events begin at 11 a.m. F.V. will return to SIUE April 26 for the Twilight Open .
