Hazelwood Police Officers Honored for Heroism with Life Saving Award
At a recent Hazelwood City Council meeting, Officers Ryan Enge, Todd Greeves, and Dan Milner were recognized and honored for their heroism. Each of them received a “Life Saving Award” for taking action to save the life of an individual in an emergency situation while placing their own life in jeopardy.
On December 9, 2012, shortly after 7 a.m., these Hazelwood police officers were dispatched to assist the Florissant Valley Fire Protection District with a residential house fire at 2135 Lundy Drive. While in route to this emergency, they were advised that the home owner was trapped inside.
Upon arrival at the scene, the officers found the residence fully engulfed in flames. They were summoned by a witness to the west side of the home where they found the resident, James Johnson, sticking his head out of a small bathroom window gasping for air. However, Johnson was unable to climb out the window.
In a collaborative effort involving all three police officers, the resident was extracted from the burning structure and carried to safety. A letter of recognition received by Chief Robert Corey of the Florissant Valley Fire Protection District stated that “if not for the efforts of these officers, the resident would not have escaped the burning home.”
Afterwards, Johnson was transported by ambulance to a local hospital where he was treated for smoke inhalation and dizziness. He is currently staying with family.
