Hundreds of Children Find 100s of Eggs at Eggstravaganza
And They’re Off – Kids in the Age 4-5 group waste no time going out and picking up as many Easter eggs as they can find. Hazelwood event organizers estimated there were about 3,500 eggs in that section alone.
Despite the cold weather, more than 600 children searched for eggs at this year’s Easter Eggstravaganza at White Birch Park in Hazelwood. Hazelwood Parks and Recreation staff members helped the Easter Bunny cover the park with 14,000 colorful eggs filled with candy. With parents and grandparents, the event attracted more than 1,800 people.
Free admission was offered to both residents and non-residents. The park was divided into five sections for the following age groups: Under 24 months; Ages 2-3; Ages 4-5; Ages 6-7; and Ages 8-10. In addition to receiving eggs and a free Beanie Baby, every child had an opportunity to enter a raffle contest for a chance to win one boy bike and one girl bike in each age group.
The Easter Bunny arrived on the scene a few minutes before the egg hunt started and greeted most of the children. 2013 Miss Hazelwood Kirsten Henderson was with him and gave away free lollipops while the Easter Bunny posed for pictures with the kids.
When the siren sounded at 10 a.m., kids ran to pick up as many Easter eggs as they could find.
For some of the older age groups, the egg hunt only lasted 10 minutes. Children in the younger age groups took a little more time admiring the eggs before they put them in their basket.
The Easter Eggstravaganza was one of the first community events offered by the City of Hazelwood after the Parks and Recreation Division was established in 1975 – the same year when the Hazelwood Community Center opened its doors. Since then, this event has become an Easter tradition for those living in and outside of the community. with crowds growing in size on an annual basis.
