Defeated Candidate For Mayor Files For Florissant City Council, 1 of 2 Contested Races

BY CAROL ARNETT

Andrew Podleski, who was defeated in last year’s mayoral election, has filed to run for councilman from Ward 6. He’ll face incumbent Dan Sullivan in the April 8 municipal elections.

Podleski was defeated by Robert Lowery for mayor in April of 2007, but received 42% of the votes in that election. Sullivan was unopposed in his last election, held in April 2005.

In the only other contested council election, Greg Striebel will face incumbent Mark Schmidt in Ward 8. Ward 4 Councilman Kieth English will be running unopposed.

Ward 2 Councilman John Moran had announced earlier that he would not be seeking reelection. John Grib will be running unopposed for his seat.

SCHOOL BOARD RACES

Four candidates have filed for three seats on the Hazelwood School Board. They are incumbents Ann Gibbons, Diane Dowdy and Charles Moore and Tony Weaver, who has filed for the post the past few years.

Cheryl D. Lathan will be unopposed in her bid to serve remaining two years of Joseph Donahue’s term. Donahue, a long-time board member, resigned last summer to become the Democratic Party director of the St. Louis County Election Board.

All three incumbents in the Ferguson-Florissant School Board face no opposition in the April races. James Clark, Doris Graham and Les Lentz have filed for re-election for new three- year terms.

The school district has asked the election board to certify that an April ballot is not required because there is no opposition. (The city of Hazelwood council races weren’t available at press time)
