The Hazelwood School District hosted a Safety Workshop for Administrators. The training on Feb. 13 at the HSD Learning Center. The St. Louis County Police Tactical Operations Unit led the training, along with, Florissant and Hazelwood Police Departments.
During the safety workshop, HSD administrators reviewed revised Emergency Intruder Procedures and HSD’s School Emergency Operations Manual. Participants will also engage in table top exercises on various emergency scenarios.
“We have worked diligently to update our safety procedures and practices over the past month,” said Julia Burke-Thorpe, HSD assistant superintendent, student services.
“As a result, we have revised our Emergency Intruder Procedure, as well as our School Emergency Operations Manual. This work has been a collaborative effort with our local police departments and fire protection districts,” said Burke-Thorpe.
The safety workshop included an overview of Alert Lockdown Inform Counter Evacuate (ALICE) procedures, and HSD administrators will engage in table top exercises on various emergency scenarios.
Thorpe commented on the overall importance of the revised procedures and administrator training.
“Our next step is to bring all of our District administrators and school officials together to receive training on the revised procedures,” Burke-Thorpe said. “We have the safety and best interests of our students in mind at all times and this is just another measure to ensure that we are doing all that we can to equip our staff with the knowledge required to protect our children,” she said.
