Hazelwood School District welcomed a delegation from Brazil involved in researching science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programs for a new school system.

The delegation is charged with developing a curriculum for 400 schools. Their visit to HSD took them on a tour of Project Lead The Way® (PLTW) engineering and biomedical classes at Hazelwood Central High School. They also experienced the FIRST Robotics program through demonstrations from the RoboHawks.

Thirteen visitors from Brazil and their host, Donnie Peacock of National Instruments, spent the morning at HCHS. They were greeted by Dr. Steve Price, HSD superintendent; Dr. Brenda Youngblood, secretary, HSD Board of Education; Dr. Cheryol Mitchell, principal; Rob Skinner, assistant principal; and Gail Stewart, learning facilitator.

Peacock noted that HCHS was an “ideal place to visit” because of its “demonstrated success” with STEM and PLTW programs.

The delegation visited PLTW classes such as Aerospace Engineering, Principles of Biomedical Sciences, Medical Intervention, Digital Electronics and Human Body Systems.

The delegation included teachers, researchers and professors from different educational institutions and corporations – Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Goias, Johnson & Johnson (FIRST Brazil) and VALE Energy Solutions (FIRST Brazil).
