Hazelwood Central Track & Field Teams Place 2nd At Festus Early Bird

Hazelwood Central Track and Field Teams opened the 2012 season March 24 at the Festus High Early Bird and both boys and girls headed home with second-place finishes.

Hazelwood Central boys, Class Four State Champions the last two years, scored 109.25 points, 3.25 behind meet host Festus. Ritenour (54) was fifth, Hazelwood East (51) was sixth, McCluer South-Berkeley (37) was 10th and Riverview Gardens (nine) was 14th.

Hazelwood Central girls scored 98 points but first-place East St. Louis (Ill.) had more than doubled the second place finisher by scoring 196.5. McCluer South-Berkeley (25.5) was 10th, Pattonville (16) was 14 and Ritenour (nine) was 17th.

In Boys competition, Hazelwood Central won three out of four relay events — 4×100, 4×200 and 4×400 — Kendall Preston won the 200-Meter Dash and Chris Wright won the 110-Meter Hurdles. Meanwhile, McCluer South-Berkeley’s David Jones won the 400 run.

In Girls competition East St. Louis swept the two hurdle events, swept the four relay events and won three out of six field events. Hazelwood Central girls had only one winner as Ashley Henderson won the 100-Meter Dash.

Washington University-Gateway Invitational

St. Louis University High, DeSmet, CBC, McCluer and McCluer North took the top five places in the boys meet, while McCluer North, Cardinal Ritter, Hazelwood West, Hazelwood East and McCluer finished in the top six and behind meet winner Francis Howell.

Four and one-half points separated first place SLUH (79) and third-place CBC (74.5) with DeSmet finishing second (77) two points behind their Jesuit rivals. Fourth-place McCluer (68) and fifth-place McCluer North (63) were only five points apart. Jennings (46) finished seventh while Cardinal Ritter (41) was eighth.

While the boys top five were separated by 16 points Francis Howell won the girls meet by 21 points over second-place McCluer North (74). Cardinal Ritter (68) was third, Hazelwood West (63) was fourth, Hazelwood East (52) was fifth and McCluer (51) was sixth while Incarnate Word (24) finished 14th.

SLUH had one winner in John Esswein (1,600 Meters), CBC won two events, 100-Meter Dash (Jamal Robinson) and 4×200 Relay, and DeSmet won two events, 200 Dash (Durron Neal) and 4×100 Relay. McCluer North won three events, including two hurdles events by Aaron Mallet (110 and 300 Meters) and a field event by Keith Jones (Discus) while McCluer won two field events, Malik Ray in the High Jump and Darrion Dillard in the Triple Jump. Cardinal Ritter was led by 800-Meter winner Charles Jones, while Jennings won two events, 400 Meter Run (Alfred Larry) and 4×400 Relay.

Winners for McCluer North girls include Kimberlin Simon (100 Hurdles) and Alicia Shivers (Shot Put and Discus), Cardinal Ritter won two relay events (4×200 and 4×400), Hazelwood West had two winners, Tyler Kelly (300 Hurdles) and Lauralyn Rosenberger (Pole Vault), Hazelwood East won two events, 200 Dash (Tianna Valentine) and 4×100 Relay, McCluer’s Alauna Ray won the High Jump and Triple Jump and Incarnate Word’s Dasjah Mason won the Long Jump. Marie Arnett of Rosati Kain took fourth in the shot put.

First Capitol Relays

Hazelwood West Boys were the only non-St. Charles County team that competed at St. Charles West and the Wildcats finished third with 76.16 points. Fort Zumwalt West won the meet (108.5). Anthony Ball won the Triple Jump while Hazelwood West won the 4×400 Relay and the Shuttle Hurdle Relay.
