Middle School Student Wins Design Contest

Sanket Patel, a seventh-grade student at Hazelwood Central Middle School, is the winner of the Hazelwood School District PTA Council’s annual T-shirt design contest for the PTA Council Scholarship Run-Walk. His art teacher is Tara Vuagniaux.

Each year, the Council accepts designs from students across the District. The winner is chosen by a vote and receives recognition from the Council and the HSD Board of Education.

Patel was presented a restaurant gift card, a free race registration and color copies of his winning design by HSD PTA Council President Sarah Day, HSD Board of Education President Cheryl Latham and Principal Robert Lawrence. He will be honored at a board meeting in the spring.

Patel was surprised to find out that he’d won. “There were so many contestants I didn’t think I’d win,” he said.

“My mom gave me the idea and I really liked it,” he said. “I thought about people who are running and then added a background.” The design features silhouettes of runners on a path, a sun and footprints.

Patel enjoys art and said that his ideas and drawings are based on his mood. “I usually draw a lot at home.”

Patel is an A-student, and his favorite classes are gym because he likes “being active” and science because he “likes to solve problems.” He is enrolled in SAIL, Students Activities in Investigative Learning, the District’s middle school gifted education program.

HSD PTA Council Run-Walk is May 12 at Hazelwood Central High School. For more than 30 years, the Council and the PTA Council Scholarship Foundation have welcomed students, families, community members, runners and walkers to participate in Run-Walk. Registration is available online at www.hazelwoodptacouncil.com or www.hazelwoodschools.org
