Florissant homeowners will have an additional $22 this year, as the Florissant City Council passed a bill last week that will reduce the sewer lateral fee assessed on all residential property in the city from $50 to $28.
The fee is used to fund the sewer lateral program, which replaces the sewer lateral line going from a residence to the main sewer line. The program started in 2000 with a $28 fee, and in 2003, residents voted to increase the fee to $50 in order to maintain the program.
The program is currently well funded and the council decided to lower the fee.
Council President Keith English noted that $28 is the amount most municipalities in the county charge. He also said that the city engineer did not foresee any problems with the rate decrease.
Councilwoman Karen McKay noted that since voters had passed the increase in 2003, the council could again raise the rates up to the $50 voters approved if necessary. She noted, however, that the fee could be raised by a smaller amount, such as $5, if necessary.
