Mayor Tom Schneider wants to “light up the Shrine” and the grounds of Old St. Ferdinand Shrine for the 225th anniversary celebration of the government of Florissant on Friday, Nov. 18. Schneider intends to have the shrine grounds lit so the parking lot can be used as a plaza for the event.

The celebration will begin with plaque dedications for Fr. Pierre DeSmet (1801-1873) at 6 p.m. and for St. Rose Philippine Duchesne (1769-1852) at 6:15 p.m. The Shrine, school house and Knights of Columbus grounds will be open from 5-10 p.m. At 7 p.m., a special Mall will be held at the Shrine church.

Slices of the 225th anniversary birthday cake  and coffee will be served at the school house. The Knights of Columbus will have a fish fry, clam chowder, beer and soda. French wines will be available in honor of the original settlers and St. Rose Philippine Duchesne who was born in Grenoble, France.

“This party has a Catholic theme because our founders were Catholic but this is for everyone. All pastors of Protestant churches have been invited to attend and bring their congregation to this celebration,” Schneider said.

Knights of Columbus members will direct traffic and parking. Visitors should enter from Washington St. and follow directions. Handicapped drivers and passengers will be assisted with golf carts and be allowed a drop off location.
