Hazelwood Central, McCluer North, IWA Grab MSHSAA State Titles In 2010-2011

Hazelwood Central, McCluer North and Incarnate Word Academy were among high schools that took home Missouri State High School Activities Association Trophies during the 2010-2011 school year.

Hazelwood Central won their second straight Class Four Boys Track and Field State title May 29 in Jefferson City. It was the Hawks’ Third Boys Track and Field title and the school’s 16th since 1977. Combined with Hazelwood High the Hawks have won 19 MSHSAA titles.

Michael Hester helped the Hawks repeat State Track by winning state at 200 and 400 Meters and anchored the 4×400 Relay team to a state title.

Hazelwood (Central) , with help from Hazelwood West won their first Boys Missouri Scholastic Lacrosse Title May 28 in St. Charles. It is the second non-MSHSAA state title in a club sport which includes winning Ice Hockey in 1996. So the total number of MSHSAA and club sports state titles for Hazelwood and Hazelwood Central combined is 21.

Hazelwood Central took home a second place trophy in Class Six Football as the Hawks finished 13-1 after falling Nov. 27 to Kansas City Rockhurst, 10-7.

Besides snapping a 19-game winning streak the Hawks ended their hopes for an undefeated title with a loss for the fifth time in six title game appearances. It was the 10 second place finish for the Hawks, and MSHSAA record with five of those losses to Rockhurst, four decided by a touchdown or a field goal.

McCluer North won their second Class Five Boys State Basketball title school history, all coming in the last five years, March 12 in Columbia, Mo. The road to winning state included winning the District Two title game, Feb. 26 at Hazelwood Central, knocking off previously undefeated Chaminade, 57-56 March 5 at the University of Missouri-St. Louis and defeating Lee’s Summit North, 62-59 March 11 in Columbia. Overall McCluer North has won seven MSHSAA state titles since 1975.

McCluer North also got a state champion in Class Four Track And Field Last May in Jefferson City. Deondre Canaday won the shot put title with a 57’11.5″ heave on his second attempt.

Incarnate Word Academy has 24 MSHSAA State Championships in three sports in a 35-year period. Girls Basketball has only four titles but the Red Knights repeated as Class Five State champions for the first time in that sports last March in Columbia.

Incarnate Word was challenged in the State Tournament, from the quarterfinals to the championship game. IWA defeated Fort Zumwalt West three times including a 48-45 quarterfinal win March 5 at the University of Missouri-St. Louis on a three-point buzzer-beater by Nakiah Bell. In Columbia IWA avenged mid-season back to back losses by edging 2010 Class Four champion Webb City, 60-56 on March 11 and on March 12 defeated Blue Springs for the second straight year in the championship game with a 59-49 decision.

IWA also took home two more state trophies but both in fourth place. Last November in Kansas City the Red Knights took fourth in Girls Volleyball for the third time in school history. On June 3-4 at the Anheuser-Busch Center, Fenton, IWA took fourth in Girls Soccer for the First time.

HAZELWOOD EAST had two state champions in Girls Class Four Track and Field as Tianna Valentine won the 100-Meter Dash and helped the 4×200 Relay win state.

HAZELWOOD WEST had a Class Four State Wrestling Champion in Antoine White won at 119 pounds.

McCLUER SOUTH BERKELEY took second in Class Three Boys Track and Field last May, winning 4×100, 4×200 and 4×400 Relays while Lonell Watkins won at 100 and 200 meters.

DeSMET was a Class Six Football semifinalist for the second year in a row, losing at Hazelwood Central, 20-14 Nov. 20, 2010. DeSmet won the Missouri Rugby Football Union title in early June.
