Maryland Heights Police Detective Sgt. Joe Eagan was shot in the face by an assailant while on police surveillance, and he is still recovering from his injuries.
The St. Ferdinand Athletic Association, along with the support of the St. Ferdinand Parish, of which Eagan is a long-time member, has been hosting a four-week-long basketball tournament to benefit Joe and his family during this difficult time.
This benefit tournament concludes this weekend Saturday and Sunday through April 16. It includes 31 third and fourth grade girls and boys basketball teams from throughout the St. Louis metropolitan area. In addition to hosting the tournament, a BBQ also will be held throughout the entire event. The tournament games run from 8 a.m.-9:30 p.m. Saturdays, and from 1-7 p.m. Sundays,.
Games are in St. Ferdinand’s Gymnasium, 1765 Charbonier Road, Florissant.
Sgt. Eagan has been dedicated to law enforcement for more than 28 years, and has been with the Maryland Heights Police Department for the last 23 years. He was on a stake out about 2:30 a.m., when an armed gunman tried to carjack his vehicle. Upon realizing Sgt. Eagan was a police officer, the gunman shot him in the face.
Sgt. Eagan was able to call for help from his fellow detectives and was rushed to the emergency room. He has been through numerous surgeries and has a long road to recovery in front of him.
The tournament admission price is $1 for kids 12 and younger, $2 for adults, and $5 per family. An ad book also will be available along with T-Shirts and a daily 50/50 drawing.
For persons who are unable to attend the tournament, but wish to make a contribution, they can do so by sending a check to:
