Census 2010 : Florissant Still Over 50,000 Residents

The population of the city of Florissant has remained above 50,000, a number that pleases Mayor Robert Lowery in the official 2011 Census  and keeps the city as the largest in population in St. Louis County.

The 2010 Census showed Florissant gained 3.3 percent with 52,158  residents compared to 50,497.  Some of that gain came from annexations

“If the population is above 50,000, certain federal grants come directly to us,” he said in an interview. Lowery said that the population stayed over 50,000 mostly due to annexations.  “I pursued annexations, but not just for the census,” he said. “They were areas that were part of our community and we need to work together.”

Lowery also pointed out that the city has had residents return from other areas. “We’ve had a lot come back from St. Charles,” he said.                              -Carol Arnett
