The Hazelwood School District Board of Education approved a recommendation to hire Duane Hawthorne as the head football coach for Hazelwood West High School. Hawthorne, currently a health teacher at WHS, has played defensive back and was also part of the special teams for the San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys.
Hawthorne also served as the head football coach for University City and was the St. Louis Metro Coach of the Year in 2009-10.
“We are excited about the experience that Coach Hawthorne will bring to the football program at Hazelwood West High School,” said Tim Williams, activities director. “He already knows many of our students and he is looking forward to using his expertise to improve our football program.”
Hawthorne has also coached at McCluer South-Berkeley and Ladue Horton Watkins high schools. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Lindenwood University.
