High School Championships Boys Golf Tees Off District Events

High School Boys Golf begins District meets between April 29 and May 6, with rain dates scheduled for May 7 or 8.
It is the first of the Missouri State High School Activities Association District Championships for Spring Sports. Tennis, Track & Field, Girls Soccer and Baseball follows.

The District Championship teams qualify for State Team completion, in Springfield (Mo.) or Bolivar, May 14-15. The top 10 golfers that are not on the District Championship team will also qualify for state but will compete as individuals. However if a high school team (or teams) qualifies at least four or five golfers for state that team(s) qualify for state team competition but will only send those who qualify.

All eight Suburban North Conference teams, including the majority of Florissant Valley area high schools, will compete in Class Four, District Three at Crystal Springs Golf Course, Maryland Heights. They include all three high schools in the Hazelwood School District — Central, East and West — Two high schools in the Ferguson-Florissant School District, McCluer North and McCluer, two high schools in the Parkway School District, Central and North, as well as Riverview Gardens, Ritenour and tournament host Pattonville.

Meanwhile Trinity Catholic is assigned to Class Three, District Four at Mexico, Mo., while Lutheran North will be competing in Class Two, District Two in Troy, Mo. The state meets will be in Springfield for Class Four (at Freemont Hills Country Club) and Class Three (at Deer Lake Golf Course) and in Bolivar for Class Two.

BOYS TENNIS — There is no scheduled opening date but district meets must close by May 12. The top four teams in each district advance to the Team Regional round, May 15, odd-numbered districts versus even numbered districts at the site of the higher seeded teams. The winner of the number one versus number four seeded teams will host the Team Sectional and Quarterfinal rounds the weekend of May 19 with the Quarterfinal winning team advancing to Team State meet, May 24 at Springfield, Mo.

Most of the area high schools — Hazelwood Central, Hazelwood East, Hazelwood West, McCluer North, and McCluer join Suburban North Conference rivals Ritenour and Pattonville in Class Two, District Three at Riverview Gardens. Parkway North and St. Louis University High will also be at Riverview. Meanwhile, Trinity Catholic and Lutheran North will be in Class One, District Three at Mary Institute-Country Day School.

TRACK & FIELD — Beginning this year all four classes will compete in district meets, followed by sectional meets and conclude with the state championship meets in Jefferson City. The top four finishers in each of the 18 events (boys or girls — four events maximum per individual), will advance from districts to sectionals and the top for from each sectional event advance to state.

Classes One and Two will compete in District meets on May 5, Sectional meets on May 12 and the State championships on May 18-19. Classes Three and Four will compete in District meets on May 12, Sectional meets on May 19 and the State championships on May 25-26.

McCluer North will host Class Four, District Four, May 12 with Hazelwood Central, Hazelwood East, Hazelwood West, McCluer, Normandy, Parkway North, Pattonville, Ritenour, and Riverview Gardens will have boys and girls teams joined by the boys of DeSmet and the girls of Incarnate Word Academy. Sectional Qualifiers will be at Chaminade College Prep, May 19.
In Class Three Trinity Catholic, Lutheran North, McCluer South-Berkeley and Jennings will compete in District Three May 12 at MICDS with Sectional Qualifiers returning to MICDS on May 19. In Class Two North County Tech will be in Louisiana, Mo., on May 5 for Class Two, District Two with Sectional Qualifiers competing May 12 at The Principia. Athletes in all four classes must meet qualifying standards, in time or distance, for individual district events.

GIRLS SOCCER — District tournaments are scheduled for May 12-19, Sectionals are May 22, 24, Quarterfinals are May 26, Semifinals are June 1 and Finals are June 2. Quarterfinals, Semifinals and Finals involving area teams will take place at the Anheuser-Busch Center, Fenton.
Florissant (James Eagan) Civic Center will serve as hosts to Class Two, District Three with McCluer North is the host school. Hazelwood Central, Hazelwood East, McCluer and Riverview Gardens will be in that tournament.

Meanwhile Hazelwood West will be in Class Two, District Five at Parkway North with Ritenour, Pattonville and Francis Howell North joining in.

Elsewhere Incarnate Word Academy will host Class Two, District Two with Normandy, Roosevelt, Vashon and Gateway Tech in the field. Trinity Catholic will host Class One, District Five with Lutheran North, Jennings, Soldan International Studies, Crossroads and University City in that field.

Sectionals involving winners from Class Two, District Three and Class One, District Five will be May 22 at the Anheuser-Busch Center. The Class Two, District Two winner plays at Farmington High May 22 while the Class Two, District Five winner plays May 24 at the A-B Center.

BASEBALL — District play begins no earlier than May 12 and ends no later than May 19. Districts with more than eight teams can play what MSHSAA calls “pigtail bracket games” on May 11 while inclement weather may force districts to close later than May 19. Since area teams are in Classes Three and Four Sectionals are May 24 at odd-numbered district winners, Quarterfinals are May 26 at sites to be announced, Semifinals and finals are June 1-2 at the University of Missouri-Columbia Taylor Stadium.

Hazelwood West will be the host school in Class Four, District Seven with the winner to host the winner of Class Four District Eight. Joining West in Class Four, District Seven are Hazelwood Central, Hazelwood East, McCluer North, McCluer and Riverview Gardens.

Lutheran North will be the host school in Class Three, District Seven with the winner to host the winner of Class Three District Six. It is a nine-school district with Trinity Catholic, McCluer South-Berkeley, Central Visual & Performing Arts, Jennings, Miller Career Academy, Soldan International Studies, Cardinal Ritter and University City Competing.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL — There are only 39 high schools that field the sport according the February, 2007 edition of the MSHSAA Journal, all in the St. Louis area. That is less than the minimum of 50 required for the MSHSAA to sanction the state championships. Teams, however will put together a “state tournament” beginning with districts, sites to be announced,” as early as May 14 and the state championships to be played at a date and site to be announced.

North County Tech and Trinity Catholic are the only Florissant Valley area high schools that sanction the sport.

WATER POLO — There are only 23 high schools that sanction Water Polo, all in the St. Louis area but none of them are in the Florissant Valley area. The state tournament, not sanctioned by the MSHSAA, will take place May 12 (Sweet 16), May 16 (Quarterfinals), May 18-19 (Semifinals-Finals) at the St. Peters Rec-Plex.

LACROSSE — It is a club sport for boys and girls not sanctioned by the high schools and MSHSAA. Post-season dates and times are to be announced. Hazelwood Central is only area high school Lacrosse club and it includes a boy’s team and a girl’s team.
