The Legend of KungFu now plays at the White House Theater in Branson.
It’s always encouraging to see new entertainment ventures come to Branson, the entertainment capital of Mid-America.
In the past two years, the southwest Missouri community has seen Yakov’s Moscow Circus, the Cirque Montage and Cathy Rigby in Peter Pan all sail across Branson stages. Now a new, unusual venture for this area has made its way to the White House Theater.
The Legend of KungFu may be the most ambitious project to ever hit these hills. The highly entertaining, fast-pace show is difficult to describe because it’s many things. Kung Fu is only part of the show. It’s really story telling, dance, ballet, and astounding acrobatics with a touch of Circque de oleil all wrapped in a unique package. The show has played all over China, in North America and was part of the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
The Legend of KungFu tells the story of a young boy who is apprenticed by a monk to pursue spiritual and physical harmony. There are seven acts to the 2-hour show (one intermission) and nearly 60 performers in a dazzling spectacle of music, dance an aerobics.
After performing in a few North American cities, the troupe (China Heaven Creation International Performing Arts Company) was looking for a place to develop its U.S. market. They considered Las Vegas, Wisconsin Dells and Pigeon Forge, Tenn., before purchasing the White House Theatre in Branson and opening in May. Obviously the Chinese owners have a lot of faith in their decision in Branson and its eight million visitors a year.
The night we saw the show the audience was sparse, indicating to us the show needs some good publicity as it is well worth the time and cost to see this colorful and high-energy production. Although now based in Branson, the producers still plan to take the show on the road .
