Alamo Bowl Date Dec. 29 for Marching Hazelwood West Wildcat

The Marching Wildcats of Hazelwood West High School are preparing for a trip to the Valero Alamo Bowl in San Antonio in December.

The bowl game is Dec. 29 and will be broadcast on ESPN. The game is a showdown between football teams from the Big 12 and Pacific-10 conferences.

Aaron Jackson, band director, said the band will leave Hazelwood West on coach buses on Dec. 25 in the evening and return on Dec. 30. Sixty-six band members are participating. The cost of the trip is $947 per student. Parent chaperones are traveling with the band, as well as volunteering to drive the band’s equipment trailer.

“The band will participate in a field show competition and a parade review competition. We will perform music from our show, ‘Zero Gravity,’” said Jackson.

“For the half-time performance, we will perform with other bands as one mass band,” he continued. “The music is from the rock group Queen and includes the songs ‘We are the Champions,’ ‘We Will Rock You,’ ‘Another One Bites the Dust’ and ‘Bohemian Rhapsody.’”

To raise money for the trip, the band has sold pizzas, cookbooks and shirts, and held a trivia night and mouse races, among many other activities.

In 2008, the Marching Wildcats performed at the Konica/Minolta Gator Bowl and the 75th Annual McDonald’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in Chicago.
