Hazelwood West, McCluer Track Teams Win Spring Season Openers

Hazelwood West and McCluer High Schools open Boys Track and Field 2007 by winning separate events last Saturday.

Hazelwood West boys won the St. Charles West Relays, the only school that was not from the Gateway Athletic Conference. McCluer won the Boys Gateway Invitational that was held at Washington University’s Bushyhead Track and Francis Field. In the Girls Gateway Invitational, also last at Washington University, McCluer finished second to Cape Girardeau Central while Hazelwood West took sixth.

Hazelwood West boys scored 122 points at St. Charles West, eight ahead of second-place Fort Zumwalt South. McCluer boys scored 93 points at Wash. U. and finished 11 points ahead of second place, and 2006 Class Four State Champion, St. Louis University High. McCluer girls scored 82.11 points, six behind Cape Girardeau Central’s 88.11, while Hazelwood West girls scored 53.72.

Hazelwood West boys won two out of the three individual events at St. Charles West including Lamark Brown in the 100-meter Dash and David Bradley in the 300-meter Hurdles. Hazelwood West boys also won the Shuttle Hurdle Relay, the 800-meter Relay, the High Jump Relay and the Long Jump Relay.

At Wash. U. McCluer boys won two individual events, David Tanksley in the High Jump and Lynex Owens in the 300-meter Hurdles, and one relay event, 4×400 meters. McCluer girls won two individual events, Khara Harmon in the Triple Jump, Kianna Phillips in the 200-meter Dash, and the 4×100-meter Relay.

OTHER WINNERS AT WASHINGTON U. include Alicia Bowman, Hazelwood West, Girls High Jump; Tyler Shaw, Lutheran North, Boys 110-meter Hurdles; Lutheran North Boys 1600-meter Sprint Relay, Pattonville Girls 1600-meter Sprint Relay and Jennings Boys 4×200-meter Relay.

Also last Saturday HAZELWOOD CENTRAL hosted the JON FIX INVITATIONAL last Saturday. Due to circumstances beyond this writers control results of that meet were not available.

BASEBALL — LUTHERAN NORTH is the only North St. Louis County High School that won their first three games played prior to March 25. LHSN defeated Trinity Catholic, 4-3, Hazelwood East, 12-6, and Alton, Ill., 4-1. In the SUBURBAN NORTH CONFERENCE RITENOUR was 2-2 in the Troy Tournament, RIVERVIEW GARDENS started 1-1 including a 13-9 win over Trinity and HAZELWOOD WEST started 1-2 after playing three Parkway District schools, defeating Parkway North, 5-4/

GIRLS SOCCER — INCARNATE WORD ACADEMY opened 2007 in Columbia, Mo., with a pair of shutout victories, 4-0 over Rock Bridge and 2-0 over Hickman. ROSATI-KAIN has defeated McCluer, 1-0, and Bishop DuBourg, 3-0.

In the SUBURBAN NORTH CONFERENCE RITENOUR has outscored their first four opponents 19-0 in three wins at the Brentwood Tournament (St. John, 7-0, Valley Park, 10-0, and Brentwood, 2-0) and a scoreless tie against Orchard Farm. McCLUER NORTH won 2-1 over Parkway North and PATTONVILLE won 1-0 over 2006 Class Two State Runner up Fort Zumwalt West.
