16 Hazelwood Athletes Sign On For Higher Education, College Play

Sixteen high school athletes from Hazelwood Central, Hazelwood East and Hazelwood West High Schools signed on the dotted line to play sports for colleges and universities.

Hazelwood Central had 10 students who accepted college scholarships in soccer, football or softball.

Central seniors Jason Kamp, Ben McMahon and Chris Beseau will play soccer for Lewis and Clark. Senior Ali Walsh will play soccer at Drake University and Benny Jeffery will play soccer at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

Central football star Marvin McNutt will play for Iowa next year. Senior Devion Moore is staying closer to home, and will play football for the University of Missouri- Columbia and Chris Owens will play football for Northwest Missouri State University.

Stacy Bates will play softball for Missouri Baptist University and Amanda Buffa will play softball for Maryville University.

“You are looking at over $800,000 in free education for these athletes,” said Steve Berry, activities director at Hazelwood Central. It’s a great day for student athletes, their parents and their coaches.”

At Hazelwood East High School, four senior football players signed college letters of intent, as beaming parents, smiling coaches and a proud principal watched.

William Anderson is bound for Arkansas State University, while classmate Daniel Gray will go to Missouri Valley College. Thomas Merriweather will be traveling to the University of Miami, Ohio and Jason Howard will be attending Lincoln University.

“This is the payoff for all of your hard work,” said Hazelwood East Principal Mark Martin as he shook each young man’s hand.

At Hazelwood West, two football players signed up to play in the college ranks. West Wildcat LaMark Brown will become a Kansas State University Wildcat and senior Andy McCune will play football for Lindenwood University.

“They are both really good kids. LaMark was K-State’s No. 1 recruit,” said Keith Herring, coach at Hazelwood West. “Andy is probably going to be doing the kicking duties at Lindenwood.”
