Developer Of Value City Property Details Plans For Redevelopment; 3 Stores Planned at Site

By Carol Arnett

The Florissant City Council held a public hearing on a proposed redevelopment of the Value City  property on Lindbergh Boulevard.

Richard Obertino, spokesman for the developer,  said the redeveloped property would have three tenants. Although he did not name them, Mayor Robert Lowery has said in a press release last week that they are Dick’s Sporting Goods, Best Buy, and a pet shop. The pet store would be a relocation of a store already in the city.

The two larger stores would be housed in the former Value City. One would have approximately 55,000 square feet and one approximately 35,000 square feet. The third tenant, the pet store, would be in an addition that would be where the Value City lawn and garden center used to be, to the side of the building. This new addition would be approximately 12,000 square feet.

Obertino said the entire front of the existing building would be removed. A new front with the new stores’ entrances would be built.

Obertino said the redevelopment would create 250 temporary jobs during construction, and 200 permanent jobs when finished.   The developer is asking that the stores be allowed to be open from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m..

Obertino said the developer would like to break ground in September. No one spoke in opposition at the hearing.

In other matters , the council passed two bills allowing new businesses to open in the city. The first bill allows a Hertz car leasing business at 8201 North Lindbergh. The second bill allows The Tan Co. to open a tanning salon in the center located at 8286-8188 North Lindbergh.

In other news, Council President Keith English announced that in the future, Council Executive sessions will be held in the council chambers. The executive sessions, usually held before the regular council meeting, have always been open to the public, but they have been held in a small conference room off the council chambers.
