Lutheran High School North opened the 2010 Baseball season with three victories in the first week, which included two routs, while Hazelwood Central opened the season with a pair of wins including a rout.
Both Lutheran North and Hazelwood Central steam-rolled past Trinity Catholic last week. LHSN won 13-4 on March 22 a day after Hazelwood Central won in a 10-0, five-inning shutout. Lutheran North steamrolled past Riverview Gardens, 18-0 in five innings on March 24 and edged St. Charles High, 8-7 on March 26. Hazelwood Central won 9-5 over University City on March 26.
Lutheran North scored four runs in the second inning against Trinity, added three in the fifth, a pair in the sixth and four more in the seventh. Hazelwood Central scored three runs in the first and third inning against Trinity while adding a pair in both the third and fourth innings.
Lutheran North, against Trinity got three runs batted in from Trey Massenberg on three hits including a double and a triple while scoring twice. Brendan Buenger and Joe Ryals each had two hits and drove in two runs while Buenger had a double and scored a run. Zach Burnett, the winning pitcher, had two hits and drove in two runs; D.J. Johnson had a double and drove in two runs while Tyler Saddler scored twice.
Hazelwood Central, against Trinity, got a complete-game two-hit, seven-strikeout performance by Johnathan Harris, who also hit three times, scored twice and drove in a run. Matt Dezort had two hits including a double and scored twice while Joe Pizzamenti doubled, drove in two runs and scored a run.
Lutheran North, against Riverview, had eight players scoring at least one run, seven of them at least twice as the Crusaders scored six runs in both the second and fourth innings, three runs in the third inning and a pair in the first. Burnett scored four times on two hits including a double, Johnson scored three times and had two stolen bases to go along with a double, Massenberg drove in four and scored twice while hitting two doubles. Devon Haynes, who drove in two runs, Saddler and Tyler Branneky each scored twice.
Brendan Buenger had three hits, drove in two runs and scored once while Conner Buenger gave up no hits and struck out six in three innings as the winning pitcher.
Hazelwood Central defeated University City on a five-run seventh inning after scoring three in the third but not before U. City scored a pair of first-inning runs and added a pair in the sixth. Mike Eagan was the winning pitcher with nine strikeouts. Harris drove in three runs on two hits, David Goering scored twice on two hits and drove in a run and Ryan Crandall scored three times and drove in another.
Lutheran North had 14 hits against St. Charles High and scored five runs in the first inning. Brendan Buenger scored two runs on three hits and drove in a run while saving the game on the mound as relief pitcher for Branneky, who also had three hits. Ryals had two hits while driving in two, Massenberg scored twice on two hits including a double, Johnson had two hits including a double while scoring a run while driving in another and Conner Buenger drove in two on a hit.
NORTH COUNTY CHRISTIAN started the season one week before all the other high school teams started and the Crusaders won two games over rivals in the TRCAA. On March 16 NCCS defeated Christian Academy of Greater St. Louis, 12-6 while on March 19 the Crusaders routed Collinsville (Ill.) Christian, 13-1 in a five-inning game.
After scoring three runs in the fourth and fifth innings against CAGSL, NCCS scored four runs in the sixth inning. William Keating was the winning pitcher striking out four batters in three innings while driving in three hits, scoring twice and driving in a run. Derrick Watson scored twice while driving in two more, Steven Oscko had three hits including two doubles and scored twice, Clayton Wright scored twice on two hits including a triple, Tommy Martin drove in two while James Owens scored twice.
Watson struck out nine Collinsville Christian batters in a complete game while scoring three runs on three hit while driving in two runs and had three stolen bases. Kris Smith drove in five runs on three hits and scored twice while stealing three bases while Oscko stole four bases while scoring three times.
