Keeven and Kirby Students Rewarded With Morning at NASCAR Race Track

Performing well on the spring Missouri Assessment Program tests has its rewards for students at Keeven Elementary and Kirby Middle School, who celebrated their accomplishment with laser tag, car racing and rock-climbing.

Students who were fourth-, fifth- or sixth-graders at the time of the MAP were treated this semester as fifth-, sixth- and seventh-graders to a morning at the NASCAR SpeedPark at St. Louis Mills.

“The students are the ones who scored proficient on the MAP last year,” said Cheryl Greene-Umstead, sixth grade teacher at Keeven.

Several parents, three teachers and Lisa Strauther, the assistant principal, chaperoned the event, which was funded by the Keeven PTA.

“It is always a pleasure to see the excitement that the students feel regarding their outstanding achievements at school and we take pride in acknowledging their hard work,” said Strauther. “Most importantly, the support and monetary donations that the Keeven PTA demonstrates toward the students embodies a strong support system that ultimately benefits each student at our school.”

For Kirby seventh-grader Ornella Bailey, a morning at NASCAR was a welcome task for her day’s to-do list, which included working on a mystery disease and completing an art project.
