Celebrates Revitalizing of the Northside community 

New North St. Louis Bakery & Café opens Aug. 15 featuring African comfort food, famous Uhuru Pies and baked goods

The aroma of freshly baked pies, and homemade African comfort food will fill North St. Louis when Uhuru Bakery & Café officially celebrates its Grand Opening on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at 12 p.m. at 3719 W. Florissant Avenue.

Led by Black Power Blueprint architect Ona Zené Yeshitela, the new café offers a welcoming gathering place where residents and visitors can enjoy Uhuru’s famous pies, fresh pastries, breakfast bowls, deli sandwiches, plates, wraps, hand pies, burgers and soups and more.- Homebrewed Ginger “Beer”, “Jamaica” Hibiscus Drink, Uhuru Blend air-roasted coffee and community-centered hospitality.

The menu is a mix of flavors from African, Caribbean, Southern and African working class foods, with a focus on fresh, garden-grown, homemade and vegan food accompanied by Uhuru baked goods.

For more than 40 years, people have been enjoying Uhuru’s delicious foods at California and Florida markets and festivals and at the popular Uhuru Bakery Cafe in Oakland in the late 1980s. Since last November, shoppers at Soulard Farmers Market have been raving about Uhuru’s pies.

The café is already earning attention as a unique destination along the West Florissant corridor. The bakery and café is part of the growing Uhuru District that includes Shamba La Uhuru Freedom Farm and the One Africa! One Nation! Farmers Market. Together, these institutions create a farm-to-table ecosystem that grows, prepares and distributes fresh food while creating economic opportunities for the community.

The celebration will recognize the volunteers, donors, contractors, pie buyers, neighbors and supporters whose contributions helped bring Uhuru Bakery & Café to life.
