City of Florissant Celebrates Arbor Day at Manion Park

The Traditional Arbor Day Celebration was celebrated by the City of Florissant on Wednesday, May 1 at Manion Park where 3 new trees were planted. In attendance was Mayor Tim Lowery, Parks Superintendent Kevin Green, his Foreman Dave Klaus, The Gardeners Club of Florissant, Ward 2 Councilman Paul Manganelli, Parks Superintendent of Recreation Jimmy Kirincich, and members of the Parks Maintenance Department to assist with the planting of the new trees.

All 3 of the new trees planted were donations from Waldbart and Sons. Everyone in attendance received a packet of seeds that were donated by Pure Air Natives.

The ceremony was led by Lauren Hollenbeck, Parks Recreation Manager of Aquatics, who has a background in Conservation Biology. She invited local kids to be a part of the ceremony and used this moment to educate the children about the importance of trees and why we plant and care for them.

Trees provide several benefits to a community when properly planted and maintained. They help to improve the visual appeal of a neighborhood, increase property values, reduce home cooling costs, remove air pollutants and provide wildlife habitat, among many other benefits. Trees reduce pollution and help purify the air by absorbing carbon and many other pollutants.

A proclamation was read in observance to the Arbor Day celebration. The City of Florissant was named Tree City USA for 2024 by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of the City’s commitment to effective urban forest management.

The City of Florissant urges all citizens to support efforts to protect the trees and woodlands and to support the City’s urban forestry program. We will continue to keep Arbor Day a tradition in the City of Florissant.
