J.S. McDonnell Bridge in Hazelwood;
Tainted Soil to be removed
On Wednesday, March 20, the Saint Louis County’s Department of Transportation and Publi c Works (TPW)
closed McDonnell Boulevard between Byassee Drive and Eva Avenue in Hazelwood for a $3.4 million bridge replacement project.
The road will remain closed between Byassee and Eva through 2025. After the
Saint Louis County TPW contractor removes the J.S. McDonnell Bridge – a 73-year-
old structure that spans Coldwater Creek – the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will
remove radiation-contaminated soil from the site. This process could take as long
as 10 months.
Once the tainted soil is removed, the contractor will build the new bridge, which
will feature two driving lanes in each direction, a three-foot-wide shoulder on one
side and a five-foot-long shared use shoulder on the other.
Approximately 15,000 vehicles cross J.S. McDonnell Bridge on a typical weekday.
During the closure, motorists are advised to use Banshee Road as a detour.
