“The Color Purple” at Florissant Performing Arts Center

Few seats left for Hawthorne’s

The Color Purple musical on Florissant stage

Hawthorne Players’ outstanding production of The Color Purple begins this Friday at the Florissant Performing Arts Center, located at Parker Rd. and Waterford Dr., and seats are going fast.

The Tony-award winning revival of the musical adaptation of Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel (and the popular 1985 Steven Spielberg film) spotlights Celie, a downtrodden young woman whose personal awakening over the course of 40 years forms the arc of this epic story. The show features a joyous score of jazz, ragtime, gospel, African music, and blues.

Director Nancy Crouse is thrilled to be part of bringing the show to the Florissant stage. “When I directed Hawthorne’s The Wiz in 2014,’ she says, “several of us on the creative team started talking about having the talent in our St. Louis community to do The Color Purple here.”Hawthorne Players received a $5,000 grant from the Regional Arts Commission for this production.Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. on July 28, August 4 and 5, with nearly sold out matinees at 2 p.m. on July 29 and April 2.

The musical ticket prices are  $25 for adults, $22 for older adults and students and $20 each for groups of 8 or more
