St. Louis County Tasked with upgrading Cannabis Regulations

Health to work on Cannabis Regulations

County Executive Dr. Sam Page has tasked the County Department of Public Health to work with the St. Louis County Council in establishing common-sense regulations regarding cannabis use in public spaces.

Currently, the county’s clean air code that limits smoking of tobacco in public does not apply to cannabis smoking. That needs to change – and soon. Dr. Page recognizes that our residents now have the right to smoke marijuana but that freedom should not infringe on the health of others.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, secondhand marijuana smoke contains many of the same cancer-causing, toxic chemicals found in tobacco smoke and contains some of those chemicals in higher amounts.

The county will also be working to establish zoning regulations for cannabis dispensaries and cannabis cafes as sites for on-premises consumption. Factors to be considered will include establishing buffer zones for schools, day-care centers, liquor stores, county parks and other locations.
