Dining Divas Welcome 2022

Sunny Street Cafe Was Dining Divas

Choice to Start 2022

By Lisa Kampeter

It’s nice to start off the New Year with brunch and the Dining Divas. I always look forward to this get together, hearing about everyone’s holidays, talking about what’s to come of the New Year, and enjoying breakfast (my favorite meal) at some place new to us. And this year’s Divas brunch was no exception.
Finding a place that will take a reservation for a group of our size is always difficult. There are several restaurants that serve brunch that we’ve wanted to try, but waiting for an hour or more to get a table is not appealing to any of us. A friend of mine recommended Sunny Street Café on Manchester as she and a group of friends had recently visited. She said they were very accommodating, had a small room for their group, and best of all, allowed them to bring in alcohol as they did not have their liquor license. A couple of us checked out the menu and jumped on getting a reservation.
When asked if we’d prefer a table up front or in the back room, I was happy to request the back room far away from the front door and the frigid temperatures. It was nice and cozy in there when we arrived. But that didn’t last long. A complaint competition between the Hot Flashing Divas and the Bundled Up Divas began.
“Where’s our waitress? It’s cold in here.”
“I think the room temperature is comfortable.”
“No, there is cold air blowing.”
“Turn up the heat.”
“Have a cocktail. That will warm you up.”
The bickering made me chuckle.
We had a few bottle of champagnes to share, and they were tasty with orange juice or cranberry juice. Bailey’s with coffee or in milk was a popular option too.

Most of us enjoying these breakfast drinks weren’t concerned about the cold. I guess the alcohol was working!
The Cultured Diva talked to us about her trip to Jordan and Egypt and how much she really enjoyed that adventure, even though traveling with a big group can be difficult sometimes. Thankfully, there were no COVID scares for them as she worried that she wouldn’t make it back to the States for the holiday season. The Travelling Divas shared their winter plans for a Key West trip, and jealousy set in with talk of sunshine, beaches, and warmth, which was the opposite of what we were having this day.
The group discussed our charitable intentions for 2022, and we agreed that helping teachers with their classroom needs would be our focus before the new school year. The Educator Diva’s face brightened as she is well aware of all that teachers need above what the school provides. Plus, for someone who loves teaching so much and her students, you can tell that the current situation is really weighing on her. Although she seemed happy to return to the classroom after the holiday break, she’s more in need of normalcy for her kids.
And that normalcy would be nice in restaurants too. These days, patience is always tested in restaurants. Hopefully, this trend changes. We were more than pleased that Sunny Street Café had more than one waiter, but our server was running around covering lots of tables. Some in the group thought she could have done better, but the restaurant’s crew was slim. I was just happy to get our food in a relatively average amount of time. And one crew member saw how much fun we were having, she asked to join us.
Sunny Street Café offers winter specials and a senior menu. That pleased the Elder Divas, even though they didn’t want to be thought of as “senior”. The biggest complaint I heard was the food not being warm. That happens often with bigger groups. But the food was good and the portion sizes were nice.
But what makes the breakfast spectacular was the group. It was so nice seeing the laughter coming from the entire table. The conversations were loud and simultaneous, and at times, our expressions gave us away.
“Did she really just say that?” was one expression that came from the Troublemaker Diva.
“Oh no. No, no, no, no!” said the look on the Non-Confrontational Diva’s face as she made the “cutting the neck with the hand” gesture to make the conversation stop. The Naïve Diva was discussing a really touchy subject that wasn’t to the liking of hers.
And then there was the Sassy Diva who was doing everything to contain her laughter at the conversation one Diva was having with her pet (who was not present)
It’s always entertaining, this group is. And we look forward to the year ahead with more laughter, hopefully better than average food, and a Baby Diva arrival. Adios 2021! 2022, we’re really pulling for you.
