BY JIM WIENERS

Hazelwood Central hosts Riverview Gardens Saturday in a 2 p.m. (note the game time) Football game that gives the winner control of their chances to win Class Six, District Four.

The other Class Six, District Four game — which has Hazelwood West hosting Pattonville, also Saturday at 2 p.m. — could speed up the fate of a district champion. Wins by Hazelwood Central (7-1, 4-1 Suburban North Conference, 1-0 +12 District) and Pattonville (5-3, 2-3 SNC, 0-1 -12) sends Hazelwood Central back to the Class Six Quarterfinals. Wins by Riverview Gardens (5-3, 3-2, 1-0 +13) and Hazelwood West (2–6, 2-3, 0-1 -13) sends Riverview to the quarterfinals for the first time since competing in 2003 Class Five.

Hazelwood Central had a 47-14 fourth-quarter lead last Friday at Pattonville, thanks to four touchdown passes by Marvin McNutt, two to Roshon Morris, and two DeVion Moore TD runs. However, with reserves in the game, the Hawks had to withstand three Pattonville touchdowns in the last 3:42 and left Pattonville Stadium with a 47-35 win. While preventing starters from injuries in a rout, Central head coach John Pukala was upset with the reserves and said “the bench needs to come in and do their job.”

Riverview that same night at Meyerkord Field had to overcome a 14-6 Hazelwood West third-quarter lead. A.J. Steward ran for three touchdowns, passed for another and added a two-point conversion pass in the second half for a 32-14 Ram win. “We were not connecting (in the first half)” said Riverview head coach John Atwell, so “we made adjustments,” which resulted in 26 unanswered Riverview points.

CLASS THREE, DISTRICT FIVE (BOTH FRIDAY, 7 P.M.) — LUTHERAN NORTH (6-2, 1-0 +1) AT CARDINAL RITTER (3-5, 0-1 -2) — McCLUER SOUTH-BERKELEY (1-6, 0-1 -1) AT TRINITY CATHOLIC (4-4 1-0 +2) — Lutheran North and Trinity Catholic are each a win away from a Nov. 4 title game at LHSN. Trinity Catholic won their first ever district game last Friday as a fourth-quarter safety tackle by Matt Schroeder defeated Cardinal Ritter, 24-22.
