The City of Florissant Environmental Quality Commission, Midwest Recycling Center and St. Louis Community College at Florissant Valley will host the third annual Electronic Recycling Event at the STLCC-Florissant Valley campus on the lower parking lot, P-9 from 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 17 The campus is located at 3400 Pershall Road in Ferguson.
Electronics consist of valuable resources which require considerable energy to process and manufacture. Recycling electronics recovers valuable materials, conserves resources and results in lower environmental emission than making products from virgin materials.
Many will need to dispose of televisions rendered unusable by the impending switch to digital broadcasting. Midwest Recycling Center will be on hand to accept televisions, computers and other “white” appliances. These appliances will be remanufactured into aluminum and steel by shredding and melting them into nuggets that can be reused in other products. Instead of throwing those old electronics away, community members are encouraged to bring them to be recycled. Other recyclable items include:
Computer Peripherals: CDs, CDRW drives, CPUs, hard drives, laptops, notebooks, monitors, printers, routers, scanners, servers, zips, DVDs, floppy drives.
Office Equipment: Adding machines, copiers, fax machines, multifunction machines.
Communication Equipment: Phone adapters and chargers, answering machines, cell phones, corded phones, cordless phones, pagers.
Miscellaneous: Battery back-ups, data cartridges, digital cameras, DVD/video players, electronic game devices, pocket PCs, rechargeable batteries (no alkaline batteries), televisions, household appliances.
Televisions, laptops and computer monitors can be recycled for a $10 fee. This event is open to the public. For more information, call 314-839-7654.
