Finals Against Catholic Marianists

    Two Ferguson-Florissant School District High School Football teams, McCluer North and McCluer High, play this weekend in the District Football Finals against two Catholic Marianist high schools, Chaminade College Prep and St. Mary’s

McCluer North visits Chaminade Friday, Nov. 15, in a 7 p.m. game for the Class Five, District Three title.

    The winner will advance to the State Quarterfinals Nov. 22 or 23 against Fort Zumwalt North, the top-ranked team in Class Five state, or Columbia-Battle for the right to play in the Nov. 29 or 30 State Semifinals. McCluer North could host the State Quarterfinal Nov. 23 with a win Friday.

   McCluer hosts St. Mary’s Saturday, Nov. 16 in a 1 p.m. game for the Class Four, District Two title. The winner advances to the State Quarterfinal Nov. 22 or 23 against Farmington or Cape Girardeau Central for the right to play in the Nov. 29 or 30 State Semifinal. A McCluer win against St. Mary’s will send the Comets to Farmington or Cape Girardeau.

   McCLUER NORTH-CHAMINADE — this will be the fifth Meeting since 2004 between the Stars and the Red Devils from the Metro Catholic Conference, and the third in post-season districts since the bracket playoffs began in 2012. McCluer North is 4-0 against Chaminade since 2004 including first round district games in 2013 (38-28) and 2014 (47-28). McCluer North (currently 7-3) last won a district title in 2011, the last year of a round-robin format, while Chaminade was a Class Five State Runner Up in 2015 (to Fort Osage).

Senior Travon Springfield is McCluer North’s top scoring Star with 22 touchdowns and 15 two-point conversions. In the Nov. 8 Class Five, District Three Semifinal win at Parkway West, 50-25, Springfield scored 36 points on five touchdowns and three two-point conversions. In 10 games, Springfield carried the ball 142 times for 1,055 yards. Senior Anglo Butts scored 15 touchdowns.

   Chaminade (7-3) is coming off a 35-21 home win Nov. 9 over Webster Groves and uses an aerial attack for the majority of scoring. Senior Brady Cook completes 166 passes for 2,731 yards and 27 touchdowns while senior Loren Fortune Jr. scores 15 touchdowns while receiving 37 passes for 817 yards.

  McCLUER-St. MARY’S will be meeting for the first time this millennium and both enter this Saturday’s game matching 9-2 records. The Comets are coming off a 34-6 home win over 4-7 Hazelwood East, the second time in four weeks McCluer wins over the Spartans (34-24 at East Oct. 19). Senior Cameron ran for a pair of Comet touchdowns while senior Jaylen Gardner, a transfer from McCluer South-Berkeley who completed 88 passes for 1,233 yards and 17 touchdowns, ran for a touchdown and threw for another against the Spartans.

St. Mary’s, a Division I member of the Archdiocesan Athletic Association which shuts out 0-10 Riverview Gardens (46-0) and defeated Suburban Conference Central American Division Champion Affton 41-20, uses a lethal passing attack. Senior Cam’Ron McCoy completes 148 passes for 2,588 yards and 33 touchdowns while sophomore Kevin Coleman caught 59 passes for 1,215 yards and 21 touchdowns.

   TRINITY CATHOLIC — St LOUIS PRIORY meet Friday, 7 p.m. at Trinity for the Class Three, District Three title and the winner plays Nov. 22 or 23 against Lutheran St., Charles County or Mexico, Mo., for the right to play Nov. 29 or 30. Trinity, coming off a 49-6 home win over University City, is led by senior James Frenchie, with 13 touchdowns and eight two-point conversions, and freshman Chris Cotton, completing 74 passes for 995 yards and 13 touchdowns. Trinity (7-3) has losses to currently unbeaten Lutheran North and East St. Louis, Ill.

   Priory, 9-2, with district wins over 1-9 Jennings  (47-8) and Metro League rival John Burroughs (28-21), is led by junior Harrison Wilmsen, completing 133 passes for 2,061 yards and 21 touchdowns.

   LUTHERAN NORTH — LIFT FOR LIFE Academy Charter meet Friday, 7 p.m. for the Class Two, District Two title at LHSN and the winner plays Nov. 22 or 23 against Scott City or Caruthersville. Lutheran North is 10-0, with 48 first-quarter points in a 68-0 win over Cuba, Mo. Sophomore Brian Brown leads the Crusaders, completing 63 passes for 1,307 yards and 17 touchdowns. Lift for Life is 10-1 with wins over Carnahan of the Future (41-0) and Duchesne (36-18), both district games at Bayless High.
