Incarnate Word Wins 3 District Titles, Qualifies Cross Country For Class 3

     Incarnate Word Academy, an all-girls high school, won district titles in three out of five teams while taking second in Tennis.

      On Nov. 2, at Spanish Lake Park, Incarnate Word won Class Three, District Two Girls Cross Country by scoring a team-low 40 points, nine better than second-place Lutheran South and 23 better than third-place John Burroughs. IWA and Lutheran South qualified their teams for the Class Three State Championships Saturday, Nov. 9 at Gans Creek Cross Country Course in Columbia. Start time is 11:30 a.m., the top 25 runners and top four teams receive medals while the top four teams receive trophies.

     Seven Red Knights finish in the top 23, four of them in the top nine. Junior Elyssa Toal leads IWA with a fourth-place finish, running the Spanish Lake Park Course in 19:49.86. Other top 10 finishers include Junior Eden Toal (seventh 20:43.38), freshman Sinclair Stewart (eighth 20:53.34) and junior Ellie Vazzana (ninth 20:54.37). Top 25 finishers include junior Alayna Burke (18th-21:48.05), senior Helen DeMarcantonio (20th-22:06/51) and junior Sydney Fredrickson (23rd-22:20.79).

     SOFTBALL — Incarnate Word Academy took home their third state trophy since 1999. IWA is still looking to win their first state championship. IWA took fourth place Nov. 1 at Killian Softball Complex in Springfield following looses to eventual state champion Jeff. City Helias Catholic.

   IWA won a pair of shutouts in Class 3, District 4 at Westminster Christian Academy. As the top seed, the Red Knights won 15-0 over University City, Oct. 17, and 11-0 over Parkway North, Oct. 18. IWA won the Oct. 23 Sectional at Affton, 7-0 over Rosati-Kain and won the Oct. 28 Quarterfinal at home over Cape Girardeau Notre Dame, 12-7

    VOLLEYBALL — IWA won a Missouri State High School Activities Association record 36 District or Regional title since 1976 when the Red Knights won Class Three, District Six title Oct. 30 over Trinity Catholic 25-5, 25-19 and St. Charles High 25-16, 23-16 However, IWA lost at home in Sectional Two to St. Dominic, 25-21, 28-26.

   Other Sports- Incarnate Word took fifth in Class Two, District Two Golf Oct. 7 at Links at Dardenne, O’Fallon, while sending senior Catherine Salem to State, Oct. 21-22 at Silo Ridge Golf and Country Club, Bolivar. IWA Girls Tennis finished second in Class One, District Five to eventual State Champion John Burroughs.

    HAZELWOOD WEST will send two Cross Country Runners — senior Jenna Foelsing (Girls) and junior Edwin Wangui (Boys) — to Class Four State Saturday in Columbia. Girls Tennis won Class Two, District Five matches as the top seed over  Hazelwood Central, 5-0 (Oct. 8) and Ritenour, 5-1 (Oct. 9)/   TRINITY CATHOLIC softball won Class Three, District Five at home as the five seed over four seed Jennings, 24-2  (Oct. 16), top seed McCluer, 25-10 (Oct. 17) and two seed Hazelwood East, 20-2 (Oct. 18).
