Brown Students’ Artwork Brightens Flights for Returning Military Personnel

Students at Brown Elementary School have spent time penning artwork that will see a lot of mileage this holiday season.

World Airways, a commercial carrier of people and cargo, has been transporting military service personnel to and from the United States for many years. This year, it will continue its tradition of ferrying soldiers and sailors to and from Iraq for two-week breaks. To demonstrate support and appreciation for their efforts, the inside of each aircraft will be decorated with the students’ artwork.

Beth Schrader, the reading specialist at Brown, learned about World Airways’ annual holiday flights from her husband Dan, who is a World Airways pilot.

“They sent him information and he passed it on to me,” she said. “I know our principal, Bill Heckel, is a veteran, so I brought the idea to him and he was excited about it. He suggested that it go through the art teacher.”

Recently, art teacher Linda Goedeker explained the project to some of the third grade students. It needed to be done on 8 X 11 sheets of paper and should include the student’s name, grade and school name. To help the students brainstorm about ideas for their designs, Goedeker wrote keywords on the board, such as “America,” “Thank You,” and “Welcome Back,” among others. The teachers discouraged students from including weapons in their drawings.

“It makes me feel good to know that they served our country and they get to go see their relatives,” said Kayley Cunninghan, 8. She said she has a relative in the Army. For her design, she wrote ‘Welcome Back to your own home’ with a border around the page.

“I think it’s good the Army has good people,” said Jordan Davis, 8. “I like how they protect us. I thought up drawing the Earth and I thought up the words.”

Davis drew a globe and colored it blue and green with the words “World Peace” below it. On one side was a heart in which read, “Thank you, Army!”
