Expressway Extension To Mills Mall Debated At Hazelwood Council

BY CAROL ARNETT

The Hazelwood City Council discussed the Maryland Heights Expressway Extension at the recent council meeting. At issue was a recommendation by City Manager Ed Carlstrom that the city support the extension with a $5,000 contribution.

“This extension will provide another route into the city,” Carlstrom said. The $5,000 would be used to study putting four lanes all the way to St. Louis Mills.

Councilman Robert Aubuchon questioned spending the money. “You say it’s not a log of money, but we balk at contributing to North County Incorporated and other groups that directly impact the city.”

Assistant City Manager Dan Meers said that the extension would “essentially create a bypass from highway 40 to highway 370, other than 270.”

Councilman Mike Conley said he had concerns about the proposed extension. “It will create problems where the Earth City Expressway ends,” he said, adding, “It’s bad enough there now.”

MAYOR CARR FAVORS EXTENSION

Mayor T. R. Carr said the extension would be good for Hazelwood. “It will ease access to 370 and Mills,” he said. “That’s the only reason to support this.” Carr said the extension would be useful to the city. “This is something we need, especially with Cabela’s and other things going on at the Mills.”

Councilman Matt Robinson said he was concerned that the city sent a letter on dated June 7 saying that it supported the project. He said he did not know a letter was sent. Carr said that the letter indicated support, but not financial support.

The council voted to put the matter on the agenda for a first reading, with Aubuchon and Conley voting no.

TAUSSIG AT MO. BOTTOM ROAD REDESIGN

Carlstrom also presented the council with a contract for the design and construction of the St. Louis Mills Boulevard intersection. “This is the intersection at Taussig and Missouri Bottom Road,” Carlstrom said. He said it needed to be redone for Mills and for the new school building going up.

Carlstrom said he was recommending that the city use the same firm that was doing the design and construction of the new school’s drive. The council held a first reading on the matter.

In other action, the council approved a liquor license for the Pink Galleon at 9085 Dunn Road. New owners are taking possession of the business on Dec. 1.
