Really Be Proud of Their STL Blues
By Randy Gardner
This is the day a lot of people have been waiting for. Even though it’s Thursday and the series is over, I am writing on Tuesday just hours before the big final game 7 with the Dallas Stars. I am really excited that the Blues kept the series alive and forced a game 7 with a commanding game 6 win in Dallas 2-1.
The only thing that scared me, and I think a lot of others, is that the Blues were playing at home which has not been that friendly in the playoffs. Usually you want to play at home but I feel for this team, it has become a distraction. I know it sounds weird but sometimes not sleeping in your own bed or in your same routine of the drive to the rink can be beneficial.
When you are on the road, you are forced to be out of your element. On the positive side though, how can you not get excited to play when the fans are going crazy? What a feeling it must be to score a goal and feel the presence of the roar of the crowd. I say feel it instead of hear it because the place shakes when the crowd goes crazy.
Either way, by the time you are reading this, The Blues are either on their way to the Western Conference Finals, one step closer to the Cup or they are on the way to the golf course right now. Either way, the fans of St. Louis should be really proud of this team as they were in dead last on Jan. 3.
This has been a true building block season for the the Blues and the fans. I think you can honestly say, the Boys are back. For me, this is about one player that has really stepped up and that is goaltender Bennington. He has kept the Blues in almost every game, just as St. Louisan Ben Bishop has done the same for the Dallas Stars. It has been a battle of the goaltenders in this series.
Cards Seems Out of the Spotlight . . . for Now
I am going to be totally honest, with the hockey playoffs going on and life happening with work and coaching, I have not had a lot of time to commit to following the Cardinals. I think after the hockey season, people will have many more conversations about the Cardinals. I have asked three or four people today about the Cardinals and they have all changed their conversations to the Blues. It is truly a baseball town that is quickly becoming a hockey town also at its core. It really just depends on the time of the year. Everywhere you look right now, people are either wearing a Blues jersey or a Cardinals jersey. It’s pretty awesome.
As I wrap up, I have noticed something over the past few weeks with the nicer weather. There are not many kids that ride their bikes anymore. When we were little, that’s all we did. Now it is replaced by riding a virtual bike on a video game. It is sad, as the good ole days drift off. The times I remember most as a kid, kids today don’t do anymore. A lot of kids don’t even know how to ride a bike. Take a moment and put your kid on a bike and teach them the freedom of what we used to know as a kid. It’s a lot of fun they will enjoy.
