Hazelwood Central & East Football In Top 10 in Mo. Massey Ratings

BY JIM WIENERSThis season HighSchoolSports.net will release high school football ratings in each state and nationwide through Massey Ratings a system created by Ken Massey, a math professor at Carson-Newman College in Tennessee and computer ratings analyst whose ratings are among the computer rankings used in NCAA Division I-Bowl Division teams in the Bowl Championship Series.


Each weekly ratings will be released Tuesday and prior to Aug. 25 St. Ignatius, and Ohio school is rank ed first nationally. The overall ratings will be determined by schedule, offense, defense and power.


In Missouri Kansas City Rockhurst was ranked first in the overall ratings followed in the top five by Class Six State Runner Up Blue Springs South, Blue Springs, Jefferson City and Liberty. Hazelwood Central was rated seventh, the highest rated St. Louis area high school, while Hazelwood East was rated 10th.

All eight Suburban North Conference teams were rated in the top 27 including McCluer North (16), McCluer (18), Ritenour (19), Hazelwood West (20), Pattonville (22) and Riverview Gardens (27).

Among the other North St. Louis County teams in the ratings include Normandy (63), McCluer South-Berkeley (115), Jennings (143), Lutheran North (191) and Trinity Catholic (244).

Each of the six classes are also rated in the Massey Ratings. Five Suburban North teams are in the top 15 out of 32 including: Hazelwood Central (six), McCluer North (nine), Ritenour (10), Hazelwood West (11) and Riverview Gardens (15) while three Suburban North teams are rated in the top nine in Class Five including Hazelwood East (three), McCluer (seven) and Pattonville (nine). In Class Three McCluer South-Berkeley was rated 12th, Lutheran North was 41st and Trinity Catholic was 53rd.

SUBURBAN NORTH CONFERENCE NOTEBOOK
— Last years Suburban North Football teams were 29-5 against teams outside the conference including a 9-1 mark in post-season play. Suburban North teams were 3-0 against Columbia-Rock Bridge and 3-0 against Jackson a year ago and Hazelwood Central, Hazelwood East, Pattonville and Riverview Gardens were undefeated outside the conference. Ritenour had the most non-conference losses, to St. Louis University High and Mehlville, both in Class Six, District Two, McCluer lost in the Class Five Sectional Round to Waynesville while Hazelwood West (against DeSmet) and McCluer North (against Jefferson City) each lost a non-conference game before districts.


BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
— McCluer North will try to defend the Suburban North Conference meet title they dominated last year on their own on-campus course. North was the only team that qualified past district competition last year with a third-place finish on their own course but was seventh out of eight teams that competed last November in Class Four sectional competition at Forest Park.
