Lutheran North Football sees their season end in the Class Two State Semifinals Nov. 24 in Wardsville, south of Jefferson City, as Blair Oaks quarterback Nolan Hair airs the Falcons to a 48-21 rout of the Crusaders.
It was the fourth consecutive semifinal loss for Lutheran North, which finish the season 10-4, and the Crusaders are 6-6 in state semifinals. Blair Oaks, 14-0, will be in their fifth state final Nov. 30 and seeks their third title since 2004 when the Falcons play first-time state finalist Lathrop in a 3 p.m. game. It will be at the University of Missouri’s Faurot Field at Memorial Stadium, in Columbia. Lathrop won 28-21 Nov. 24 at home over Lamar, ending the Tigers’ seven-year state-title run.
It was all Falcons from the start as Hair threw the first of six passes about 2:50 into the first quarter to Benner Thomas, his first of four scoring receptions, from 60 yards out. In the second quarter, Hair not only threw two more touchdown passes to Thomas but also ran in for a two-point conversion with three seconds left in the first half. In the second half Hair threw three touchdown passes; the first to Thomas about 2:22 into the third quarter and the last to Braydan Pritchett who intercepted a Jordan Smith pass and returned it 95 yards to wrap up the scoring with 3:01 left
Smith, a junior, as well as seniors Isaiah Azubuike and Issac Glenn, each scored a Lutheran North Touchdown. Lutheran North lost the season-opener to Illinois Class 7A State Champion LaGrange Park Nazareth Academy and is the only team to defeat Mary Institute Country Day School, which plays Ladue Horton Watkins Nov. 30, 7 p.m. at Faurot Field for the Class Four State title. MICDS and Ladue are playing for Ladue-Warson Road (a mile and a half apart) Rams’ bragging rights
BOYS SOCCER-This is the second state trophy the Crusaders take home to go along with the Class One Boys Soccer (10-17), which took fourth place after losses to State Champion Barstow (4-2) and Fair Grove (6-0) at World Wide Technology Soccer Park in Fenton. Senior Tom Xu scored twice against Barstow while senior goalkeeper Gregory Carr made 17 saves in nearly two full state final four games (159:18).
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL-Besides Football and Boys Soccer, Lutheran North won Class Two, District Five Girls Volleyball. The Crusaders finished 20-10-4 overall but were 1-4 in the Metro League. The Crusaders won five matches, each in 2-0 sweeps, Sept. 15 to win the McCluer High Northside Invitational.
