Hosted by the Hazelwood Firefighters
The Hazelwood Firefighters’ Community Outreach Program will be hosting a Safety Day on Saturday, June 23, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. This event offers an opportunity to meet the Firefighter/Paramedics who service their area with fire protection and EMS calls. The kids will enjoy seeing the fire trucks and ambulance on display and get a red firefighter helmet to wear. There will be tons of fun activities for families to do throughout the event.
In addition, several organizations such as DePaul Medical Center, Mercy Medical Center, HFD’s STARS Program, The Salvation Army, CRUSH and Bringing Families Together will have tables set up with representatives on-hand to answer questions and give out informational literature. Plus, smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors will be available to any property owners who need them.
Starting at noon, an Arch Air helicopter will land behind the firehouse, giving everyone a chance to look inside and sit in the pilot’s seat. At 1 p.m., there will be a visit from the St. Louis Cardinals’ mascot Fredbird. From 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., kids will be able to pet the animals provided by Cindy’s Zoo, enjoy pony rides, and watch a man make balloon animals. And, free food will be provided for everyone.
Other forms of entertainment planned include a bounce house, kids’ obstacle course, and a chance to dress up like a firefighter. The firefighters will also demonstrate how they can cut and peel away parts of a vehicle in order to get a crash victim out with as little movement as possible.
In addition to providing a static display of a police motorcycle and the department’s D.A.R.E. vehicle, the Hazelwood Police Department will have a K-9 and his handler do demonstrations. Plus, a radar throwing speed trailer will give kids a chance to see how fast they can throw a baseball.
Other sponsors supporting the event include 1-800-BOARD UP, Bolin Towing & Repair, Home Depot and SERVPRO.
Safety Day will be held at Hazelwood’s Fire House #2, 6800 Howdershell Road, next to Howdershell Park. Admission is free and open to the public.
