2nd Year for Snyder Fiction Writing Contest at Hazelwood Central

In 2007-2008, family and friends of Gregory Snyder, a 1982 graduate of Hazelwood Central High School, established a fiction writing contest in his honor. In its second year, the contest awarded three students top prizes for their literary talents.

The contest was open to all grade levels; last year, it was exclusive to ninth graders. Each of the winners submitted short stories.

Cyrus Payne, a senior, earned first place and $100 for “Atlas Shrugged,” the story of what happens to the Bible’s Adam after his death.

Ellen Moore, a senior, earned second place and $50 for “Woman, Behold your Son,” a tale of a woman who goes into a burning home and knowingly rescues a man she does not like.

Claire Conwell-Vargas, a junior, earned $25 for her third place “The Best Worst Day of Olivia Hendricks Life,” about a woman who gets fired from her job and meets an unlikely savior.

The contest was coordinated by English teacher Will Blicharz, who served as a judge for last year’s entries. He thinks that opening the contest to all students was a good move.
