West Middle Student Wins Art Contest at Jamestown Mall

Raquelle Coleman, a seventh grader at Hazelwood West Middle School, won an art contest for Hazelwood School District middle schools at Jamestown Mall. William Hellems-Moody, an eighth grade student at Hazelwood West Middle School, came in second place. Students from all six Hazelwood middle schools participated. Coleman receive a $500 prize from Jamestown Mall.
A bare, white wall between two retail shops at the south end of the mall’s center court has been transformed into an artist’s canvas. Some Hazelwood West Middle School students worked collaboratively to recreate a larger version of Coleman’s winning work, which echoes the floral creations of famous landscape painter Georgia O’Keefe.
“It’s pretty and I’m happy that everybody gets to see it,” Coleman said of her creation, a white lily on a dark blue background. “It was a surprise that I won. Everyone told me that they voted for me.”
Hellems-Moody described his creation as a pink rose that he shaded in color pencil and then painted over using watercolors. “It took me two or three times to get the design the way I wanted it,” he said.
