January 2018, was a perfect month for Hazelwood Central High School Basketball Teams as the Hawks went undefeated in both Boys and Girls Varsity.
Hazelwood Central Boys went 7-0 in January including two wins in the Suburban XII Conference North Division and won their second straight Parkway West Classic title. Hazelwood Central Girls went 10-0 in January including three wins in the Suburban XII North, two wins in the St. Louis MLK Showcase at Clyde C. Miller Career Academy and a win in the St. Joseph’s Academy Shootout. Suburban XII North game at Riverview Gardens was either postponed or cancelled.
BOYS BASKETBALL — Hazelwood Central began what is now a 13-game winning streak in December with two wins in the Waynesville Route 66 Shootout and winning the Coaches versus Cancer Tournament during the Christmas break at the Meramec campus of St. Louis Community College. The Hawks opened January with a 69-67 win over CBC at Hazelwood East because Central had water pipe and weather problems. Then the Hawks won home Suburban XII North games over McCluer (71-47) and Hazelwood East (79-61).
Hazelwood Central wrapped up January by winning the Parkway West Classic with wins over the host Longhorns (69-31), Lafayette (57-42) and Lake St. Louis-based Liberty, a Wentzville District High School (77-56). It is the seventh time since 2009 that the Hawks have won the Parkway West (or Ameritime) Classic that included playing four years (2012-2015) at Missouri Baptist University. In the Parkway West Classic, senior Cameron Williams shot 56.5 percent (13 out of 23) including 63.6 percent from three-point range (7-11) and blocked six shots. Senior Shaun Williams made 11 out of 12 free throws (91.7 percent) with nine assists and seven steals. Senior Telly Wright averaged nearly 15 points per game while senior Jhaylen Covington-Berry pulled down 15 rebounds.
Overall Shaun Williams averages 16 points per game, made over 80 percent of his free throws (87 out of 108) while making 106 assists and 54 steals. Cameron Williams made over 58 percent of his shots (80 out of 137) from inside the three-point arc while blocking 21 shots and senior Xavier Ball pulled down 144 rebounds
Hazelwood Central (20-1, 3-0 Conference) hosts Hazelwood West Thursday, Feb. 8, 5:30, Columbia-Rock Bridge Friday, Feb. 9, 6:30, and Webster Groves Feb. 20, 6.p.m. The Hawks play at Riverview Gardens Feb. 15, 5 p.m., and Vashon Feb. 21, 7 p.m., and will likely be the top seed in Class Five, District Two at McCluer North
GIRLS BASKETBALL — After a 2-5 start, which includes a five-game losing streak, Hazelwood Central won 12 in a row and 14 out of their last 15 prior to taking their 16-6 record home Feb. 5 against 17-3 Mary Institute Country Day School and Feb. 7 against 17-4 Parkway North. The Hawks started their 12-game winning streak by winning the last two games of the Visitation Academy Tournament and took fifth place. Central began February with a 51-50 win at Pattonville, which could help the Hawks gain the top seed in Class Five, District 2.
Prior to Feb. 5 senior Kourtney White averaged nearly 15 points per game, made 55 of her shots from the three-point arc (72/131), over 50 percent outside the arc (42-83) and 72 percent of her free throws (54/75). Senior Kelsie Williams pulled down 135 rebounds and blocked 32 shots. Freshman Nariyah Simmons has 51 assists and 72 steals while junior Jakayla Kirk has shot over 53 percent from the floor (22/42).
Hazelwood Central visits Hazelwood West Thursday at 7 p.m. while a make-up date for the Riverview Gardens game is undetermined at press time.
