Show Me State Volleyball For IWA, Sectional Boys CC For Haz. West

For the 25th time in school history (beginning in 1976), but the first time since 2010, Incarnate Word Academy Volleyball will be competing in a state tournament.

However IWA will be making their first trip to the Southeast Missouri State University Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau this Friday-Saturday, Oct. 27-28. The Red Knights will compete in Class Three as they are aiming for their 12th state title, their first since 2005.

IWA will be playing three round-robin two-set matches Friday on Court 2 beginning at 4 p.m. against Pleasant Hill, then plays defending State Champion Lutheran South at 6 p.m. and finishes at 8 p.m. against Jefferson City Helias Catholic. Saturday. The top two teams play for the championship game at 7:30 after the bottom two play at 6 p.m. for third place (each best of three). IWA won District Six Oct 18 over St. Charles High (25-17, 25-9) and host Duchesne (25-21, 27-25) then won Sectional Two Oct. 21 over host California (Mo.) (25-14, 25-17) and Washington-St. Francis Borgia 25-21, 16-25, 25-18).

IWA will be taking home their second state trophy in two weeks. The Red Knights took fourth place in Class Three Softball following losses Oct. 20 in Springfield to Cape Girardeau Notre Dame (4-1) and Smithville (1-0). The Red Knights made their third trip to state since 1999 after three-inning wins over University City (15-0), Clayton (15-0) and Rosati-Kain (16-0) and a 6-3 home win over St. Dominic.

IWA also had state medallists in Class One Tennis Doubles as District Five and Sectional Three champions Maria Brandt and Elizabeth Goldstein took second place Oct. 14 in Springfield.

   CROSS COUNTRY — Hazelwood West Boys qualified for Class Four, Sectional Two Saturday at Parkway Central by finishing fourth (98 points) in District Three Oct. 21 at Koch Park, behind St. Louis U. High (20), Webster Groves (52) and Ladue (93). Two Wildcat senior runners finish in the top 20 as Darwin Carpenter finished in 14th place (17 minutes, 27.24 seconds) while Ryan Winters was 17th (17:40.79).

Hazelwood West Girls fell short of qualifying as a team finishing fifth in District Three (93) behind Nerinx Hall (46), Ladue (61), Webster Groves (66) and Francis Howell North (69). West will send four runners to Parkway Central including seniors Nadia Pulliam (11 place-21:15.3), Mallory Hutchcraft (20th) and Ashley Clay (23rd) and sophomore Jenna Foelsing (12th)

Also going to Parkway Central Saturday in Boys Sectionals are two from Hazelwood Central, senior Blake Patin (22nd) and junior Malik Stovall (26), and McCluer North Sophomore Sylvon Mosley-mull (24th). Hazelwood Central sophomore girls’ runner Marisa Long (24th) also qualified for Sectional Two.

The top four teams and runners from other teams at Parkway Central that finish in the top 30 qualify for State Nov. 4 at Oak Hills Golf Course in Jefferson City.

   DISTRICTS-SATURDAY — Spanish Lake Park will host the Class Two, District Two and Class Three, District Three meets with meet host Lutheran North competing in Class Two, District Two. Meanwhile Incarnate Word Academy and McCluer South-Berkeley will be in Class Three, District Four in Warrenton and North Tech is in Class Two, District Three at the Pike County Fairgrounds in Bowling Green. The top two teams and runners from other teams that finish in the top 15 head to Jefferson City, Nov. 4.
