Ferguson-Florissant District Opens STEAM Academy For Gifted Students

STEAM logo no background   The Ferguson-Florissant School District (FFSD) celebrated the opening of its new middle school, the STEAM Academy, with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, Aug. 4. led by FFSD Supt. Joseph Davis along with board members, other FFSD staff, and elected officials.

“Across this nation, we must transform public education if today’s students are to be prepared for college and career success in the future,” Dr. Davis proclaimed. “For far too long, schools throughout the country have used 19th century models to prepare students for 21st century opportunities.

This STEAM Academy is a significant step toward deeper learning for Ferguson-Florissant School District students.” “As the school has neared completion, the excitement and anticipation has grown for our students and staff,” said director of the STEAM Academy Christine Ries.

“I’m excited about the impact that we’re going to make during the first semester.” The STEAM Academy will house the district’s middle school gifted program and will focus on project-based and accelerated learning for talented teens. Students who have qualified for gifted education may automatically attend the Academy.

Other students must qualify through an application process, which includes maintaining core content grades of A’s and B’s, two letters of recommendation, a STAR Reading Lexile score of 1100, STAR Custom Performance in science and math and an interview. In addition to core subject areas, the Academy will offer classes in computer science, robotics, world language, dance, mass communication, theater, art, choir, and Project Lead The Way (PLTW).
