Dining Divas Rock Out For Dinner at Harrah’s New Sammy ‘s Restuarant

A few of the Dining Divas are die-hard “Red Rocker” fans, otherwise known as Sammy Hagar for those of you not inclined to listen to rock and roll music. He was the former lead singer of the ’70s hard rock band Montrose and lead singer of Van Halen in the mid-’80s through mid-’90s. So when Harrah’s Casino opened up a new restaurant called Sammy’s, we were excited to check it out.

After experiencing the Cabo Wabo Cantina, another Sammy Hagar restaurant located in Cabo San Lucas, our hopes were high. We envisioned fabulous food, cocktails with a kick, and dancing the night away. Reality wasn’t quite what we hoped for.

Typical Sammy Hagar concerts include bikini-clad waitresses. Fortunately, the waitresses at Sammy’s were respectfully dressed. On a not-so-positive note, our waitress was the only server that was actually a Sammy Hagar fan. We thought everyone there would be crazy fans as we were and would have been able to name the concert tour and date of every song played on the TV monitors. Not the case.

Regarding our Sammy fan waitress, her enthusiasm must have been what got her the job because her waitressing skills were anything but skillful. We had to order two drinks a piece each time she came by because she seemed to have forgotten about us.

Regarding the drinks, Sammy Hagar has a well-known margarita called the Waborita including his own special tequila, Cabo Wabo Tequila. It’s a tasty beverage that will make you weak in your knees. A few of us ordered one and agreed that it tasted like Koolaid, a very weak Koolaid. And the drink prices were very steep. The Mommy-to-Be Diva ordered a non-alcoholic spicy Bloody Mary and was really disappointed. She got a bland tall glass of tomato juice for five bucks.

Although Sammy’s has a limited menu, we did enjoy the meals we had. Don’t expect to find many healthy choices; however, the shrimp salad is a wise and delicious option. Want a nice, juicy burger? They have them, but you can only get them medium-well or well done. We enjoyed the nachos but the cheese soaked chips lost their crunch almost immediately. You had to eat them with a fork. The presentation alone of the chicken quesadillas won over the rockers in the group. They were “guitar pick” shaped. Made with shredded Cheddar and Monterey Jack cheeses, black beans, onions and chipotle aioli, this tasty dish made me wish I was on a beach in Mexico.

And so did the décor. Green, yellow, and red lights common across the border. Miniature palm trees and plants. And people kicking back in their Hawaiian attire wishing winter would go away.

Sammy’s no where close to the kind of food and atmosphere as the Cabo Wabo Cantina, but for this Red Rocker fan, who cares? It’s Sammy Hagar’s place. Plus, all proceeds go to a local children’s charity. As well as a fan of Sammy’s, I’m a fan of his attitude. “You are never as tall as when you kneel to help a child.” That’s reason alone to go back.
