High School Sports for the 2016-17 school year ended June 3 in Missouri and even though state champions were rare, we will honor the ’16-17 champions.
INCARNATE WORD ACADEMY BASKETBALL – Although it had been dominated in the past by Volleyball and Soccer Incarnate Word Academy, an all-girls school in North County, now has command of Basketball, Metro Women‘s Athletic Association and Missouri Class Four Champions. IWA, last March won their eighth state title and now holds the Missouri State High School Activities Association record for most state titles in that sport
Incarnate’s growth in Girls Basketball came in the last 12 years when the Red Knights won the last seven, three in Class Five and the last four in Class Four including last March. Since winning their first state title in 1976, Volleyball, IWA has won 28 MSHSAA State Championships including an MSHSAA record nine titles in Soccer and 11 in Volleyball, second in Missouri to Hermann.
HAZELWOOD LACROSSE — The only sports team in the area, this Club Sport, with players mainly from Hazelwood Central and Hazelwood West won the first Missouri Scholastic Lacrosse Association’s first Show Me Cup replacing Division II, which Hazelwood won in 2011. Hazelwood uses Central’s Nickname (Hawks) and the combined colors of Black, Gold and Red from Central and West, fell one game short of winning the four-club Suburban XII Conference, which would have put them in the State Championship Tournament won this year by seven-time champion Mary Institute-Country Day School, coming off their fourth consecutive title
Adding Club Lacrosse’s two title and Hazelwood Central Club Ice Hockey, a Tier II Champion in 1995 to the Varsity Sports Championships the combined total of state champions for Hazelwood High and Hazelwood Central is 25. The total number of MSHSAA State titles for Hazelwood Central is 25, starting in 1977 and there were three Hazelwood High MSHSAA titles from 1968 to 1974.
HAZELWOOD CENTRAL also took home six state event titles in Girls Track and Field including four in Class L Para Athletics by sophomore Amari Anderson in the Shot Put, 100 Meter Dash, 200 Meter Dash and 400 Meter Dash. In Class Five Girls Hazelwood Central won the 4×200 Meter Relay after setting a state record of 1:37.85 in the preliminaries while junior Deja Ingram won the 100-Meter Dash after setting Class Five records at 100 Meters (11.7 seconds) and 200 Meters preliminaries (24.15 seconds).
Hazelwood Central won Suburban XII Conference Girls Track and Field as well as Suburban XII North Division Baseball, Football and Girls Volleyball titles and was a Suburban XII North tri-champion in Boys Basketball, sharing the title with McCluer High and McCluer North. Hazelwood Central won Class Five, District Three and Sectional Two Girls Track and Field and Class Five, District Six Baseball.
McCLUER SOUTH-BERKELEY repeats as Class Three State Girls Track and Field champions, their sixth since 2007 and their eighth since the school moved from Berkeley to Ferguson. The combination of state titles between Berkeley High and McCluer South-Berkeley gives the school 29 state titles, most by any North County High School. Track and Field, Boys and Girls, have won 28 state titles combined while Football was a 1987 Class 3A State Champion.
Senior Raheema Westfall, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Athlete of the Year, won state in the 100 and 200 Meter Dashes and anchored the state-winning 4×100 and 4×400 Meter Relays. McCluer South-Berkeley also won Class Three, District Three and Sectional Two Boys Track and Field, Suburban Central Conference American Division and Class Three, District Five Football as well as Suburban Central American Softball and Baseball
McCLUER NORTH won the State Girls Class Five 4×100 Relay, District titles in Girls Tennis, Girls Basketball and Girls Soccer and Suburban XII North titles in Girls Tennis, Wrestling and Girls Basketball and shared Suburban XII North titles in Girls Swimming (Hazelwood West) and Boys Basketball (Hazelwood Central and McCluer
HAZELWOOD WEST won District titles in Softball, Boys Tennis and Boys Track and Field and won Suburban XII North titles in Softball, Boys Soccer and Girls Soccer and shared Girls Swimming with McCluer North
TRINITY CATHOLIC won Archdiocesan Athletic Association Small Division and Class Three, District Two Football titles as well as district titles in Girls Volleyball and Girls Soccer.
