A group of seven students from Parker Road Elementary School are the team winners of the district’s 2017 Scholar Bowl competition.  The students, fifth graders Jon-Michael Brown, II, Destiney Payne, Claudia Poenick, and sixth graders Bella Fernandez, Zoey Martinez, Mia Maxedon and Grace Raycraft competed against teams from all of the district’s elementary schools to win the title.  Sarah Jennings, a fifth-grade teacher at the school, coaches the Parker Road team.

Adam Coleman, a fifth grader at Combs Elementary School, is the Scholar Bowl individual champion.  Coleman competed against eight high-achieving students to answer academic questions in all curricular areas.

Scholar Bowl teams practice throughout the school year in preparation for the event.  Teams compete in four different challenges – one requires students to solve picture and logic puzzles; two of the challenges require competitors to develop winning strategies and strong math skills to win games; and in the final challenge, teams must attempt to answer academic questions in a Jeopardy-like format.

In order to take first place, a team must be strong in all four areas. Halls Ferry Elementary School placed second in the team competition, followed by Duchesne and Commons Lane Elementary Schools, placing third and fourth, respectively.  The Cool Valley Elementary School team won the sportsmanship award.
