Hazelwood School District Superintendent Nettie Collins-Hart was the guest speaker during the Spanish Lake Town Hall Meeting on March 6. She had an opportunity to share the State of the District, answer questions, and listen to comments made by residents.
During her presentation, she emphasized that the Hazelwood School District remains fully accredited, earning 120.5 out of 140 points. She also discussed that one of the District goals was to become accredited with distinction.
“The Hazelwood School District is well on its way to become accredited with distinction, we are 5.5 points from reaching this goal,” said Collins-Hart. She also shared highlights from the District’s recent Budget Review Sub-Committee Community Engagement process.
“Of course, another important goal is to balance the budget. I am thankful and proud of the more than 200 community members who signed-up to take part in the budget review process. Each of the nine sub-committees had an opportunity to go through the budget line-by-line and come up with options for recommended reductions. It was a long and arduous process,” she said.
Collins-Hart also reminded attendees about student and teacher achievement, and other positive things taking place in Hazelwood schools as she shared a few of the district’s points of pride.
“We have small neighborhood elementary schools, 1:1 Chromebook technology in grades 3rd-12th, state-of-the-art science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) labs in all high schools, new renovated libraries in all high schools and middle schools, and we have a diverse population with over 28 countries represented throughout our school district.” She went on to say, “We are the winner of several nationally recognized programs that promote a positive and safe climate and educate the whole child.”
The Hazelwood School District was recently recognized for several awards including: The Leader in Me program; Missouri Exemplary Schools–state and national schools of character; received 4 gold, 1 silver and 4 bronze awards for the Positive Behavior Support Intervention Program. The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education recognized Brown Elementary School as one of Missouri’s Exemplary Professional Learning Communities Schools.
Recently two Cold Water Elementary teachers were recognized with U.S. Presidential Science in Teaching Awards.
Collins-Hart reminded residents that schools cannot do it alone. She invited parents and district patrons to help build coalition and capacity in Hazelwood schools.
“Given the myriad of factors that our students encounter before teachers can even begin to teach, schools cannot do it alone. We need your help. You can help by visiting our schools, become an ambassador and advocate for Hazelwood schools, volunteer in our buildings, or share our school district points of pride,” she said.
In her closing remarks, Collins-Hart thanked attendees for their thoughtful questions and the Spanish Lake Association for the opportunity to speak and spend time with school district residents.
Hazelwood School District Board President Cheryl Latham, Board Secretary Desiree Whitlock, and school district administrators were also in attendance to meet and speak with residents.
