Special School District Honors Hazelwood District’s Maxine Valdez

The Special School District (SSD) recently honored Maxine Valdez, assistant superintendent for student services in the Hazelwood School District, with the Special Ambassador Award, which is the highest recognition given by SSD.  Valdez was presented the award during a dinner banquet hosted by SSD on March 8.

The Special Ambassador Award recognizes community members who demonstrate an extraordinary commitment to the students and/or staff of SSD.

Throughout Valdez’s career, she has supported students with disabilities in countless ways. Serving in various roles over the years with the Hazelwood School District, she has worked closely with SSD administrators and staff to provide a strong partnership between Districts.

In her current role, she is responsible for the Hazelwood School District’s Health Services, School Safety, Residency/Enrollment, and School Counselor/Social Worker departments, while also serving as the liaison to SSD.

It is in her role as special education liaison that she helps support a seamless integration of special education services within the Hazelwood School District—providing a strong foundation for Hazelwood students that receive SSD services in Hazelwood schools.

Valdez is an advocate for access and opportunity for students, and places the needs of students with disabilities at the forefront of her work.
