Competing teams were required to build robots in just 46 days, between Jan.7 and Feb. 21. The robots are between two and three feet tall, and weigh between 100 to 120 pounds.

“Our robot is named the Juggernaut, and is two feet tall,” said Stephanie Saunders, sponsor of the Hazelwood Central High School Robohawks. “Our students have worked very hard at this, and they are finally able to display the necessary skills they’ve learned while preparing for this competition.”

Winning teams will compete in the FIRST Robotics Championship, held in April at the Chaiftez Arena.

The game or challenge for the championship is ‘Steamworks’, where teams are required to build airships for flight, using steam pressure.

FIRST is a mentor-based program that helps students to build science, engineering, and technology skills.

The FIRST Robotics Competition pairs students with adult mentors, to design robots that will compete in a high-energy environment.

FIRST inspires students to pursue education and careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) related fields.
